Plot My Money and Origin compared
How Plot My Money and Origin compare on forecasting, taxes, Social Security, equity pay and pricing, from Origin's own pages checked November 5, 2026.
Origin is a money app that combines budgeting, investing, forecasting and an AI financial advisor. Plot My Money is a retirement planning app. Both project your finances into the future, so this page sets out how they compare, using Origin's own public pages.
Who each one is for
Origin is for people who want to track spending, budget, invest and plan in one app, per its home page. It links your accounts, and you can “Ask Origin anything” about your finances. Its AI Advisor gives personalized advice through Origin Investment Advisory LLC, an SEC-registered investment adviser. Origin also serves employers.
Plot My Money is for US households planning for retirement or already retired. Notes on the table
- Its forecasting page says forecasting uses Monte Carlo simulations and factors in taxes, inflation, investment growth and Social Security.
- Its forecasting guide covers federal and state income tax, capital gains tax and the net investment income tax.
- The same guide describes a default withdrawal sequence: taxable accounts, then traditional, then Roth. We didn't find a way to change it described, so that row is “Not published”.
- Social Security is marked Partial because the guide describes modeling early or delayed claiming and survivor benefits. We didn't find a claiming comparison tool or spousal benefits described.
- The guide says forecasting supports ISOs, NSOs, RSUs and concentrated stock positions. We didn't find ESPP mentioned.
- Origin sells estate documents. A Basic Will is free, and a Full Will and a Trust cost extra, per its estate planning page. We didn't find estate tax modeling described.
- Origin has phone apps for iOS and Android and a desktop app for Mac, per its home page.
- Plot My Money runs up to 1,000 simulated markets on the free plan and up to 10,000 on Plus.
- Plot My Money on a phone is an installable web app, not a store app.
- Plot My Money doesn't link accounts. You enter balances by hand or import them from files.
Pricing as published
Plot My Money has a free plan and two paid plans. Plus covers your household, at a yearly price of the amount shown before you subscribe. The Advisor plan covers a set number of client households, at a yearly price of the amount shown before you subscribe. Until paid plans go on sale, every feature is included for every household. See plans and billing.
Origin (checked November 5, 2026): we didn't find a membership price on its public pages. Its subscription terms say pricing for each plan is displayed at the time of purchase. Its forecasting page says forecasting comes with any membership, including a free trial.
Estate documents are priced separately on its estate planning page:
- Basic Will: free.
- Full Will: $249, shown as $199.
- Trust: $599, shown as $399.
The page says members get a discounted price, and that you can buy the Full Will or Trust at full price without a subscription.
Where Origin is stronger
- An AI financial advisor. Origin's AI Advisor gives personalized advice after a suitability questionnaire, offered through an SEC-registered investment adviser, per its announcement. Plot My Money has no AI assistant and doesn't give advice.
- Linked accounts and budgeting. You see every transaction across your accounts in one place, per its home page.
- Investing in the same app, through its own investment accounts.
- Estate documents. You can create a will or a revocable living trust, per its estate planning page.
- Apps for iOS, Android and Mac.
Who should pick which
- Pick Origin if you want budgeting, investing, a forecast and an AI advisor in one app, with your accounts linked.
- Pick Origin if you want to draft a will or trust alongside your money tracking.
- Pick Plot My Money if you want detailed retirement planning: monthly safe-to-spend, Roth conversions, withdrawal order and Social Security claiming ages compared.
- Pick Plot My Money if you want to test your own rules and spending strategies across many simulated markets.
How to switch
Plot My Money doesn't import Origin files, so you set up your plan again. Have your latest balances, pay, spending and Social Security estimates to hand.
- Start a plan and answer the setup questions about your household, income, spending and accounts.
- If you have a holdings file, import it as Excel or CSV on the Accounts screen.
- Add Social Security from your SSA statement, plus pensions and any other income.
- Compare the results with your old plan. Differences usually come from assumptions about returns, inflation, taxes and spending.
You can download your plan as a JSON file at any time. See getting started and importing and exporting.
