Getting started

Set up your plan in about five minutes, read your first results, and know what to fill in next.

Updated

This page walks you from a new account to a plan you can trust enough to act on. The first pass takes about five minutes. You can change every answer later.

Step 1: Sign in

Enter your email address and choose Email me a sign-in code. Type the code from the email and you're in. Your account is created the first time you sign in. There's no password to create.

After your first sign-in the app offers to save a passkey. A passkey lets you sign in with your device's fingerprint, face or PIN next time. You can also turn on two-step verification with an authenticator app in Settings.

Step 2: Answer the guided setup

The guided setup has six steps:

  1. Who's in your household? First names, birth years, whether you're planning with a partner and whether you file taxes jointly, your state, and any children.
  2. Work and retirement. Yearly pay, the age you plan to stop working, and the share of pay you save for retirement.
  3. What you spend. Essentials each month, and everything else each month.
  4. What you've saved. Checking and savings, pre-tax retirement accounts, Roth accounts and regular investment accounts.
  5. Social Security. Your monthly benefit at full retirement age, from your Social Security statement, and the age you plan to claim. You can skip this. The plan then leaves Social Security out and says so.
  6. Your first look. Your chance that savings last, tested against 500 simulated markets.

Choose Save my plan to finish. If you'd rather look around first, choose Explore a sample plan instead. If you're moving from another planning tool, choose Import your plan on the first step. See importing and exporting.

Step 3: Read your Dashboard

The Dashboard shows your month at a glance. The main card is Safe to spend for this month, split into essentials and everything else. Below it are tiles for your chance of success, this year's spending, your guardrails, key dates, net worth and ways to improve your chances.

Change Comfort level to see how safe-to-spend moves between Cautious, Balanced and Flexible. See the Dashboard.

Step 4: Fill in the details that matter most

The guided setup uses simple defaults. The plan editor shows a Plan complete card that lists the gaps with the largest effect first. The usual order:

  1. Accounts. Add each account with its owner, type and balance. Add cost basis for taxable accounts.
  2. Spending. Split spending into items with priorities, and add one-time costs such as a car or a roof.
  3. Social Security. Enter benefits from your statement, or let the app estimate them from your pay.
  4. Healthcare. Choose how you'll be covered before Medicare.
  5. Taxes and where you live. Check your state, and add any planned move.

Every change saves automatically and can be undone. See the plan editor.

Step 5: Check the outlook

Open Outlook to see your plan tested against many simulated markets. Look at the chance your money lasts, the range of outcomes by year, and when shortfalls happen in the futures that have them. See Outlook and what chance of success really means.

Step 6: Try changes safely

Use What if to try changes without touching your plan. Save a combination you like as a scenario, then compare up to four scenarios side by side. When you're ready, apply a change to your plan. See What if, scenarios and improvements.

What to do each month

Once your plan is set up, a monthly habit takes a few minutes:

  1. Choose Update balances on the Dashboard and enter your current balances.
  2. Read this month's safe-to-spend figure.
  3. Check where you stand against your spending guardrails.

That's enough to keep the plan current and catch problems early.
