Plot My Money and WealthTrace compared

How Plot My Money and WealthTrace compare on account linking, simulations, guardrails, Roth conversions, pricing and switching, from WealthTrace's own pages.

Last checked

WealthTrace and Plot My Money are both retirement planners sold to households and to advisors. WealthTrace links your accounts and tracks investments, fees and performance alongside the plan. Plot My Money has you enter or import balances and puts its weight on tax detail, simulations and planning areas such as estate and deferred pay. This page uses WealthTrace's own published pages.

Who each one is for

WealthTrace sells Standard and Deluxe plans to households, with linked accounts, Monte Carlo analysis and reports (pricing). Separate advisor plans add a client portal, custom reports and model portfolios (for advisors).

Plot My Money is for US households planning for retirement or already retired. It shows what's safe to spend each month, tests the plan across thousands of simulated markets, and plans taxes, Social Security and withdrawals year by year. It runs in a browser on phones and computers, and has an Advisor plan for planners who work with clients.

Notes on the table

  • Free plan: WealthTrace offers a 7-day free trial with no credit card required (pricing).
  • Monte Carlo: WealthTrace runs 1,000 simulations, with a normal distribution by default and a Laplace option that puts more weight on extreme outcomes (Monte Carlo help). Plot My Money runs up to 1,000 simulated markets on the free plan and up to 10,000 on Plus.
  • Guardrails: Monte Carlo guardrails adjust yearly living expenses when the portfolio crosses a threshold. They're listed under Deluxe, along with the Roth optimizer and the AI assistant (pricing, new features).
  • IRMAA: the Roth optimizer considers IRMAA. We didn't find Medicare premium modeling described on its own (new features).
  • Charitable giving: WealthTrace models QCDs. We didn't find donor-advised funds (new features).
  • Insurance: the advisor page lists insurance planning among the Deluxe features, without detail (for advisors).
  • Reports: WealthTrace lists detailed retirement planning reports, without naming a file format (pricing).
  • Plot My Money is an installable web app, not a store app. It doesn't link accounts. You enter balances by hand or import them from files.

Pricing as published

Plot My Money has a free plan and two paid plans. Plus covers your household, at a yearly price of the amount shown before you subscribe. The Advisor plan covers a set number of client households, at a yearly price of the amount shown before you subscribe. Until paid plans go on sale, every feature is included for every household. See plans and billing.

WealthTrace (from its pricing page and advisor page, checked November 5, 2026):

  • Standard: $19 a month, billed annually at $229 a year.
  • Deluxe: $24 a month, billed annually at $289 a year.
  • Both offer a 7-day free trial with no credit card required.

Where WealthTrace is stronger

  • Linked accounts. Standard links financial accounts through Plaid or Yodlee (pricing).
  • Investment tracking. Deluxe tracks individual holdings, performance, fees and historical balances (pricing).
  • An AI assistant. Trace AI answers questions about your plan and lets you test changes without altering the saved plan (new features).
  • Bear-market stress tests. You can place a bear market at a chosen point in the future and run Monte Carlo from there (bear market help).
  • Advisor tools. Advisor plans include a client portal, custom reports with your logo, model portfolios, and no stated limit on client plans (for advisors).

Who should pick which

  • Pick WealthTrace if you want accounts linked and investments, fees and performance tracked alongside your plan.
  • Pick WealthTrace if you want an AI assistant, or bear-market scenarios placed at a date you choose.
  • Pick Plot My Money if you want Social Security claiming compared in detail, with the earnings test, and ACA subsidies before Medicare.
  • Pick Plot My Money if your plan includes equity pay, deferred compensation or estate taxes.
  • Pick Plot My Money if you'd like a free plan, or rules you write tested in every simulated market.

How to switch

Plot My Money doesn't import WealthTrace files, so you set up your plan again. Have your latest balances, pay, spending and Social Security estimates to hand.

  1. Start a plan and answer the setup questions about your household, income, spending and accounts.
  2. If you have a holdings file, import it as Excel or CSV on the Accounts screen.
  3. Add Social Security from your SSA statement, plus pensions and any other income.
  4. Compare the results with your old plan. Differences usually come from assumptions about returns, inflation, taxes and spending.

You can download your plan as a JSON file at any time. See getting started and importing and exporting.
