Troubleshooting

Fixes for common problems with signing in, saving and syncing, results that look wrong, imports and slow simulations.

Updated

Signing in

The sign-in code email hasn't arrived. Check your spam or junk folder, and wait a minute or two. Codes expire, so request a new one if it's been a while. If you've asked for several codes, use the newest.

My passkey doesn't appear. Passkeys are stored by your device, browser or password manager. If you're on a different device, sign in with an email code, then choose Add a passkey in Settings for that device.

I lost my authenticator app. There are no backup codes, so move your authenticator to a new phone before you replace the old one. If you've already lost access, contact support from the email address on your account.

Saving and syncing

"Couldn't save" appears in the top bar. Your connection may have dropped. Your changes are kept on this device and sync to your account when the connection returns.

My partner's changes overwrote mine. If two people edit the same plan at once, the later save reloads the newer version and tells you. Re-enter your change after reviewing theirs. Undo can help.

My plan disappeared after signing out. Signing out removes the copy on that device. Sign in again and your plan loads from your account.

Results that look wrong

My chance of success changed, and I didn't edit anything. Updated balances, a new month or year, or new tax figures all change results. A different random seed changes the simulated futures too.

Safe to spend seems very low. Check that all your accounts and guaranteed income are entered, including Social Security. The Dashboard warns when Social Security is missing. Large planned purchases and healthcare are paid first. The 10% set-aside also lowers the figure, and you can change it on the Spending guardrails screen.

Safe to spend seems very high. If you're still working, the figure includes your planned savings and isn't a withdrawal amount. Also check for income that ends earlier than expected, or missing expenses.

Taxes look too high in one year. Open the year in Cash flow and look at the Taxes card. Common causes are required distributions starting, a Roth conversion, a home sale, or one spouse's death.

A state shows "Approximate" or "Not available." Some states' rules aren't fully modeled. The Taxes screen's What we model view lists what's left out for each state.

International stocks behave just like US stocks in some simulated years. With the history-based methods, international stocks use non-US developed markets from 1975 on. That history doesn't go back further, so years before 1975 use US large-company stocks for both. Choose a random method on Outlook to use separate assumptions for each.

Imports

"This isn't a plan file from this app." The import only accepts JSON files exported from this app. For another tool's export, use Import a plan from another tool.

The other tool's import is missing items. Check the Approximated and Not brought over lists on the import summary, then add those items in the plan editor.

My holdings spreadsheet won't import. The file needs one row per holding with the columns the import screen lists. In a workbook, the importer reads the sheet with those columns. Rename columns to match, or save the sheet as CSV.

Speed

Simulations are slow. Simulations run on your device. Close other heavy tabs, or lower the number of futures on Outlook while you experiment. You can choose Stop to cancel a run.

The app is slow on an older phone. Most screens use fewer futures to stay responsive. For long runs, a laptop or desktop is faster.
